After 9 years of making music in the US, I was finally able to share my latest project Open Gates of Alegría with my family and longtime friends. We worked really hard to make this tour a reality. The band, the promoters and the venue reps, we were in touch almost every day for weeks before the trip. To those helping us, I had made a special request: I needed several hundred toy maracas to be given out in our shows, for we had prepared a tribal-like moment when the band and the audience would come together chanting a song. We arrived to Colombia a couple of days before the shows and were welcomed with a list of last minute "little problems", as usual in our latin countries :). Two months of prep-work felt like a waste. Some of the guest musicians were missing, many people did not know how to get tickets, two shows had been moved to different venues, and of course, the toy maracas were forgotten. We had to quickly focus on solving the most critical "little problems", and thus the toy maracas fell to the bottom of the to-do list. The day of the first show we were still taking care of pending stuff. We were driving through Medellin and I had given up my idea of having the special "maracas" moment. We were already running late and then suddenly the traffic stopped. I was growing anxious and as I stuck my head out of the window I could see what was blocking the line of trucks ahead of us; It was a "carretillero". An old man with dark skin fearlessly and patiently pulling his old street vending cart (carretilla) across the road. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his precious cargo; his "carretilla" was loaded with hundreds of toy maracas!!! I ran out of the car and stopped him on the side of the road. I asked for a price, he said 50 cents a pair. Then I said "Se las compro todas" (l'm buying them all). He looked at me in shock with his eyes wide open as I pulled out the money and I paid him. While he was quickly loading our car he said: "Señor, me arregló mi navidad!" (Sir, you made my Christmas!!). In one day he had made a full week's worth of hard work. He left the scene with a big smile on his face, and a much lighter "carretilla". I stood there for a minute with a warm feeling in my heart and wondering if this was just a coincidence, or a confirmation that when you truly know what you are looking for, life itself helps you find it.
